What is the fascination with fancy phones?

My son turned 15 a few days ago and naturally birthdays, of course, almost always require a "gift" especially for your children. Well, one of the so-called "gift ideas" was a fancy smart phone that not only cost a few hundred dollars upront but a steep monthly data plan as well. I am not a very techy person nor do I need a complicated phone. I guess you can call me old fashion but I don't need to be figuring out which buttons to push just to answer my phone or to retrieve my messages. My phone is not outdated but it is not the greatest either. It's a simple phone that does what it's supposed to do - to make calls, retrieve calls, and to keep up with the time to text of course (my children mostly - they seem to respond better and faster with text for some reason). To make a long story short, I am stuck in a contract for 2 years! I guess we have to keep up with technology. On the other hand, with how techonology advances and changes constantly, his new phone would most likely be replaced with a fancier, more complicated, more expensive version a few months from now way before his contract expires! Honestly, the wireless providers should revisit the length of the term and consider shortening it to accomodate today's youth.

  1. I totally agree with the providers shortening their contracts or even when you ass or change things on your plan how they add more years to your contract. What is that and is that really necessary? I too am into high tech phones mostly just because of all the cool things you can do with them, but then again I am only 23! I do know that a phone is a phone and financially it is better to get the cheaper simpler phone, but I am still a young adult who wants to have the fancy "cool" phones. :)

  2. I am so glad you posted on this topic because now I know that I am not the only one that thinks all these upgrades to these fancy phones are ridiculous! I guess I am old school. My boyfriend just spent a lot on the newest Droid phone and I just keep telling him I would never ever spend that much on a cell phone. He tells me I need to accept change in technology and I say that I don't care, I will be the only one still talking on a nontouch screen, which I hate, phone! I think it's absolutely absurd as to how much people spend on phones. I don't need all these extra features on my phone. I just need to make calls, get calls, and text.. that's it!!

  3. I am with you girls. I have a pink, flip phone Nokia that I love. I do not want to learn a new phone! It is time I could be doing something else.

I am so happy I am not the only one who feels this way about those ridiculously over priced and complicated cell phones. I don't have a problem with technology, on the other hand I also don't like complications either. I like things simple.
